The material of your sewer line tells us a great deal about how it fails and how we fix it. Homes in Toquerville built before the 1970s often have cast iron or vitrified clay pipe below the yard. Cast iron corrodes from the inside, narrowing the bore until waste snags on rough scale. Clay pipe joints, sealed with mortar, invite tree roots that widen every crack over the years. The camera head carries a transmitting sonde, and a locator wand on the surface pinpoints the exact depth and position of the trouble spot. That means we can mark the ground directly above a break rather than digging a long, exploratory trench.
This diagnostic step matters for the budget as much as the repair. Once we know the fault sits, for example, eleven feet from the foundation at a depth of five feet, we can plan access, protect landscaping, and choose between a spot repair and a full-length solution. Trenchless and Traditional Repair Options
Not every sewer repair requires tearing up a driveway. Depending on the pipe condition, we offer several methods:
- Cured-in-place pipe lining: a resin-saturated liner is inserted and inflated inside the old pipe, then hardened to form a new seamless wall within the existing line.
- Pipe bursting: a bursting head fractures the old pipe outward while pulling new HDPE pipe into the same path, requiring only two access pits.
- Open-cut excavation: for collapsed sections or severe misalignment, we dig, remove the failed segment, and install new pipe on a properly compacted bed.
Each method has a place. Lining works well for a structurally sound pipe with cracks and root entry. Bursting suits a line that has lost too much wall to line. Open-cut remains the right call when a section has fully collapsed or when we must correct a sagging grade. We match the method to the specific fault rather than forcing every job into one process.
Grade, Bedding, and the Details That Keep It Working
A sewer line depends on gravity, so slope is not optional. We set residential lateral lines to fall roughly a quarter inch per foot. Too little slope leaves waste sitting in the pipe; too much lets water outrun the solids and leaves them behind. When we replace a section, we verify grade with a level and reset the bedding so the new pipe holds its pitch for decades.
Bedding material also protects the pipe. We surround new lines with sand or fine gravel that supports the pipe evenly and prevents rocks from concentrating pressure on a single point. After backfilling, we compact in lifts so the ground does not settle later and pull the line out of alignment. These are the quiet technical decisions that separate a repair that lasts from one that fails again in a few seasons.
